Um die Auswahl der Filme zu erleichtern, hat Jayasinhji Jhala (1998) “A Guide to Visual Anthropology” veröffentlicht.

Jhala geht davon aus, das sich unsere Welt in eine „Medienwelt“ verwandelt, und deshalb der Umgang mit Medien eine bedeutende Rolle spielt, auch in der akademischen Lehre.

"There is a growing recognition that a considerable portion of our knowledge about cultures of different societies of the world comes to us through film, video, television, the Internet, and other audio visual media, and that this circumstance is not restricted to persons living in technically sophisticated environments but to individuals and communities in many parts of the world which have a simpler technological circumstance." (Jhala 1998)

Laut Jhala sollen die Filme genutzt werden:

• von Leuten, die sie in Zusammenhang mit einführenden Kursen einsetzen wollen.
  
• von Leuten, die Film zusätzlich zu Texten nutzen wollen und sie als Teil des Unterrichtspaketes betrachten.
  
• von Leuten, die die Filme als Primärtext verwenden wollen, der durch geschriebenen Text ergänzt wird.
  

Die Filme sollen genutzt werden:

• um „Kultur“ zu studieren
  
• um die Intentionen des/der Autoren zu erkennen und dabei zu realisieren, dass beides – Reflexivität und Aktionismus – mehr und mehr die Kulturwissenschaft bei der Feldforschung und der wissenschaftlichen Interpretation betrifft.
  
• um die Medienkompetenz schlechthin zu erhöhen, d.h. zu lernen,
  
• visuelle Texte zu lesen und
  
• sie kritisch zu hinterfragen
  

Einleitend legt er dar, wie er die beschriebenen Filme ausgewählt hat:

“Firstly, they are offered to those who would wish to use them to teach introductory cultural anthropology and to use the films to supplement the readings that they consider part of the educational package.

As an alternate use, these films could serve as the core texts that are supported by written materials.

Thirdly, these films are suggested as a study of cultural content and authorial intent in recognition that both reflexivity and activist agency concerns more and more anthropologists in their doing ethnography and making anthropology.

Finally, the study of these films is valuabe for the acquisition of critical thinking tools by which to “read” visual texts, not merely for “content” but for “authorial intent”. These skills, wich once acquired in the anthropology classroom, will hopefully enable the student with more critical faculty with which to “read” “recreational” and “informative” visual texts in the home or workplace, soliciting product and ideology.” (Jhala 1998)

Jhala präsentiert die ausgewählten Filme in alphabethischer Reihenfolge. Er liefert viele Zusatzinformationen, wie zum Beispiel Mitarbeiter im Filmteam, Vertrieb in den USA, Formate, Genres und Stichworte. Beispiele

Jhala hat einen allgemeinen Fragekomplex entwickelt, der für alle Filme genutzt werden kann, und spezifische Fragen für jeden Film.

Schließlich empfiehlt Jhala jedem Lehrenden, sich für seine Spezialthemen selbst einen Filmführer zusammenzustellen. Er gibt Hilfestellungen zur Vorgehensweise.
